Made of up five York University students, the Sam Ruttan Quintet is a Toronto based group with a focus on modern jazz and interactive improvisation.

The goal is always to explore each tune and tell a story for the listener, a process made easier by the experience that the members have accumulated playing with each other over the past several years.

The quintet plays original compositions written by the band members and inspired by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Brian Blade, Mark Guiliana, and Kurt Rosenwinkel, as well as arrangements and interpretations of standard repertoire.
