Nabi Nabi
Nabi Nabi is a Toronto-based organ trio that blends the classic sounds of soul jazz and bebop with a modern edge. Formed by three seasoned musicians—Todd Pentney on organ, Jay Yoo on guitar, and Ian Wright on drums—the band’s name, meaning “butterfly” in Korean, reflects their ever-evolving, fluid approach to music.
Debuting in the fall of 2024 at Toronto's renowned Jazz Bistro and Hirut, Nabi Nabi quickly established themselves with their warm, intimate sound and subtle yet exciting moments. Drawing inspiration from the iconic organ groups of the past, the trio channels the influence of artists like Peter Bernstein, Larry Goldings, and Bill Stewart, while pushing the boundaries of tradition to create a more contemporary vibe.
Though rooted in jazz, the band isn’t afraid to step outside the genre, incorporating tasteful pop covers and exploring various textures. At their core, Nabi Nabi emphasizes the soothing, melodic beauty of the organ, often playing at a delicate volume to allow for deep, atmospheric ballads. That said, they never shy away from dynamic moments, occasionally turning up the heat with upbeat, high-energy tunes that show off their versatility. Whether playing smooth, reflective ballads or exciting, fast-paced grooves, Nabi Nabi offers an engaging experience that combines soul, jazz, and a touch of surprise.
