website

Saxophonist, composer and bandleader Matt Lagan started his musical education as a child and began playing the saxophone at the age of 13. He was a member of the Jazz FM Youth Big Band and took part in the Humber College Community Music School and Summer Jazz Workshops. He has studied privately with Kirk MacDonald, Kelly Jefferson, Pat LaBarbera, David French, Mark Turner, Michael Blake and Chris Cheek. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree from Humber College.

Matt has been part of Toronto’s jazz and indie music scene since 2011, performing regularly at venues such as The Rex Hotel and Jazz Bistro. He has also participated at The Halifax Jazz Festival, The Beaches Jazz Festival, The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, The Toronto International Jazz Festival and TEDx Toronto. In addition to performing his own music, Matt has also shared the stage with Pat LaBarbera, Kirk MacDonald, Alex Dean, Kieran Overs, Dick Oats, Peter Bernstein, Ben Monder, Seamus Blake and the Jazz FM big band featuring Tom Scott, Kelly Jefferson, and Lew Labackin.

The Matt Lagan Large Ensemble which consists of former and current Humber College students was formed in early 2016. It is fashioned after the Michael Brecker Quindectet, and features music from Michael Brecker’s album Wilde Angles as well as original composition and arrangements by Matt. The ensemble was featured at The Rex Hotel for a Michael Brecker tribute concert in June 2016.
