Exhilarating art-rock…The best piece of music I've heard in ages." - NPR All Songs Considered

"...a welcome reminder of what they brought to Bowie’s final studio album...should be sought out by anyone who wants another experience of the invention heard on Blackstar." - Pitchfork

"...his dedication to Bowie represents that niche of rock and hip-hop-influenced jazz...a formidable set with darkly seductive power." - The Guardian
"...juxtaposes grungy art-rock with punk-jazz, electronica and hip-hop... [his] most radical offering yet." - Mojo

(Toronto, ON - May 29, 2019) - Saxophonist and David Bowie Blackstar bandleader Donny McCaslin brings his daring fusion of vibrant electronica and illuminating art-rock across Canada this June. The tour, in support of McCaslin’s critically-acclaimed and genre-transcending album Blow. (Motéma Music), kicks off in Vancouver on June 21 with stops in Victoria, Winnipeg, Toronto (2 nights), Ottawa, and Montreal. McCaslin’s powerhouse touring outfit features Blackstar veterans Jason Lindner and Tim Lefebvre along with Canada’s beloved Ryan Dahle (Mounties/Limblifter) on guitar and vocals and Zach Danziger on drums. See below for a full routing.

With three GRAMMY® nominations and 11 albums to his name, McCaslin is one of music’s most respected saxophonist and band leaders on the scene today. As the bandleader on Bowie's final album Blackstar, McCaslin collaborated with the Starman to carry forward his penchant for reinvention. McCaslin applied that mindset to his own work, pushing his music in a bold new direction resulting in propulsive and improvisational alternative music combined with a heady blend of vocals, saxophone and flute, pianos and Wurlitzer, electric bass and pummeling drums that capture McCaslin's core roots while also bringing in more recent influences such as Radiohead and Bon Iver.

McCaslin’s latest album Blow. fully realizes McCaslin’s evolved artistic direction and is the most daring work of his two-decade career. As NPR’s Bob Boilen nicely puts it on the popular All Songs Considered when introducing “What About the Body", “It’s that place in music where it’s not anything, and it’s everything...I love this…”

Produced by Steve Wall (Tall Heights, Lucius), Blow. features a top-notch cast of musicians including vocal collaborations with Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek, fellow Bowie collaborator Gail Ann Dorsey, longtime collaborator Jeff Taylor, and singer-songwriter Ryan Dahle and additional heavy hitting instrumentalists include Nate Wood, Zach Danziger, Ben Monder, and Jonathan Maron. "The idea was to just really go for exploring these collaborations and documenting everything," explains McCaslin, adding that the project had a "good gestation process" and developed "in a way that didn't feel rushed."

McCaslin’s collaboration with Ryan Dahle, who co-wrote and sang on 4 of the songs on Blow., has spawned a burgeoning friendship and intuitive musical synergy. Even though the two musicians seem like an unlikely musical pairing ‘on paper’, McCaslin’s manager introduced them on a hunch they would connect. “We immediately hit it off creatively and personally even though we came from completely different worlds,” says McCaslin. “Ryan is a deep thinker and the way he creates sound and layers vocals really resonates with me. I’m excited to be writing and touring together.”

McCaslin will head to Europe after his stint in Canada for some high-profile appearances. "The live show is really evolving," continues McCaslin, thrilled to share his fresh material with audiences around the world. Recent years have been a whirlwind, but Blow. proves he's ready for his next chapter: "Going all in with new territory is really stimulating to me."
